Isuzu Ute Australia has given its D-Max ute its first major update in five years. That’s it, there. It has a new face and an upgraded media system which is all very nice, but it’s the new engine we’re really interested in. Isuzu calls the engine a world first. What are they on about? Let’s find out.

Now, the D-Max is getting on in years – this generation came out in 2012 and its rivals such as the Everest are much younger. But, this update has helped the D-Max catch up a little bit.

The latest D-Max has a smoother bonnet, redesigned headlights, a chunkier upper and lower grille is chunkier and restyled foglights. Everything else is unchanged.

You can get your D-Max as a single-, crew -, or space cab as a cab chassis or in ute form in 4×4 or 4×2 wheel drive and with a manual or auto transmission.

Lower grades now get a seven-inch touch screen while the upper specs get an eight inch display with sat nav.

Now that new engine. Isuzu says it’s a world first – but we reckon that’s being a bit dramatic. What they mean is there’s no other engine quite like it in the world because it was developed just for Australia.

It’s Euro 5 turbo diesel and it has more torque. The beauty is you now have more torque spread over a broader rev range.

A six speed manual or and six speed auto replace the old five speed shifters – we welcome that too.

And the D-max’s braked towing capacity stays the same at 3500kg.

What’s it like to drive: The D-Max is comfortable on the highway where that engine hardly has to work at all, but it’s hugely capable off road. Having that extra torque down low is great for overtaking, towing or scaling tough terrain.

Australia loves its utes and we’re the biggest market outside Thailand for the D-Max. So we’re so important to Isuzu that they’ve tailor made an engine to meet Aussie needs. That engine and transmission makes a top ute even better.
